IMAD/OMAD: What Are They and How Do They Work?

Posted on 09/10/202509/10/2025 By cpb No Comments on IMAD/OMAD: What Are They and How Do They Work?

IMAD (Input Message Accountability Data) and OMAD (Output Message Accountability Data) are unique identifiers assigned to each FedWire transaction by the Federal Reserve Bank system. These references are crucial for ensuring the uniqueness of each transaction and for facilitating the tracking and investigation of fund transfers. Below is a detailed explanation of IMAD/OMAD.

Structure of IMAD/OMAD Numbers

Both IMAD and OMAD consist of the following three components:

  1. Date (YYYYMMDD or MMDD)
Indicates the date the transaction was initiated.
  2. Source Identifier (ABCDXXXX)
An alphanumeric code that identifies the sending institution or originating source.
  3. Sequence Number (012345)
A six-digit number that indicates the sequential order of the transaction for that day.

Example Format:
YYYYMMDD ABCDXXXX 012345
For instance: 20250110 ABCD1234 000567

Purpose of IMAD/OMAD

  1. Tracking Transactions
Each FedWire transfer generates a unique IMAD or OMAD number, which is used to confirm the transaction’s status and facilitate investigations or tracking when needed.
  2. Identifying Issues
If delays or issues occur with a transaction, providing the IMAD/OMAD number allows the bank to quickly locate the relevant wire transfer details.
  3. Verifying Refunds
When refunds or returned deposits are involved, the IMAD/OMAD number helps the bank confirm the original transaction path and complete the necessary processing.

How to Obtain IMAD/OMAD Numbers

  1. Request from Your Bank
After the funds are sent via FedWire, your bank can provide the IMAD or OMAD number. You can contact the bank’s customer service or directly request this information from the wire transfer department.
  2. Reach Out to a Bank Manager
If customer service cannot provide the IMAD/OMAD number, escalate the request to a bank manager or the department responsible for wire transfers.

Important Notes

  • Keep the Number Secure
Once you receive the IMAD/OMAD number, store it carefully, as it is essential for addressing issues with the wire transfer.
  • Handling Returned Funds
If a deposit or withdrawal is returned, providing the IMAD/OMAD number to your bank can help locate the funds and complete the transaction efficiently.

Understanding the purpose and structure of IMAD/OMAD numbers enables you to work more effectively with your bank, ensuring wire transfers are processed smoothly and issues are resolved promptly.
